Riding the Waves

 Riding the Waves

Riding the Waves

I took a surfing class a few weeks ago!

It was a lot harder than I thought. As a complete beginner, standing on the surf board in the water turned out to be beyond me. The first skill I needed to learn was how to lie on the board and stay on it as the waves rushed me to shore.

And even that was difficult (I’m not a naturally sporty type). But also a lot of fun. It was something else to experience being carried by the waves and experiencing their speed and power – even though I fell off many times!

What DID come very easy to me was the ability to draw connections and metaphors between what I was doing in the water and larger lessons in life.

Riding the waves, getting back on the board – there’s a ton of material to work with.

The one I want to share with you today is the idea of waiting for a wave to come. You have to be patient, and not give up hope. And when it comes you just have to jump on the opportunity and ride it.

Don’t for think for a second that you’re the one supplying that speed and energy. You’re the passenger. You’re being moved by a force far greater than you. Your skill is in traveling well and staying on board.

I’ve been thinking a lot about this idea recently. After many months of slowly working on my website, BH things have been picking up speed lately and it’s all coming together.

For the past couple of weeks I’ve just been experiencing a huge surge of energy and motivation to work really hard and move forward with it.

I didn’t create that energy. I don’t know where it came from. It literally feels like a wave I just jumped on.

I’m so glad I stayed in the water and didn’t give up hope for this project even when the movement was slow.

It’s not about pushing too hard and trying to generate energy you don’t have.

It’s all about timing, waiting, and allowing yourself to be carried by the wave when it comes.
